How to go from dishcloths to clothes, and why it's not as difficult as you think
Our mother knits. She always has. But for many years, she thought her skill level was limited to dishcloths and pot holders – practical, useful, and within her comfort zone.
Two weeks ago, she took on the Ida T-shirt. And since then, she hasn't stopped talking about how lovely the yarn is and how easy it actually was to make. We're not sure she'll ever go back to dishcloths.
We all start somewhere
For us three sisters, the journey into making clothes didn't happen at the same pace or in the same way.
Kathrine started with crochet — she learned the technique, gained confidence, and then moved on to knitting. Carina crocheted gnomes and story bags and honestly thought clothes were something different and more difficult. Until Kathrine showed her they weren't. And now none of us can stop.
This is the story we encounter again and again – not just in our family, but among many knitters and crocheters. You set a limit for yourself that isn't necessarily there in reality.
What holds us back?
It's rarely about ability. It's mostly about belief.
Clothes seem bigger and more complicated than a scarf or a dishcloth. There are sizes that need to fit. There are constructions you don't know. And what if it doesn't work out?
But here's the truth: most knitting patterns for clothes are no more difficult than many other projects. They just take a little longer. And with the right kits and patterns, much of the decision-making process is already taken care of for you.
What's easiest to start with?
If you're completely new, we recommend starting with something where you can quickly see progress – a small project in a pleasant yarn to work with.
For knitting, a simple top or a vest in chunky yarn on large needles is a good first clothing project. For crocheting, a simple baby blanket or a bucket hat for a child is a manageable place to start.
The most important thing isn't that the project is perfect – the most important thing is to get started.
What did you start with?
We're curious – because we believe everyone has a story about the first project that left them wanting more. Or the one that finally made you take the leap from dishcloths to clothes.
